An afternoon of cooking

So for some reason... could be watching the F**dnetwork channel and subscribing to the magazine, but I've been doing a bit of cooking today. I made my grocery list and **ugh** went to W@ lmart on a Saturday so that I could be M@ rtha Stewart and whip up some interesting meals today. Of course, I now have meals for the next week... wonderful idea since it just might get busy once again with the county fair in town this weekend.
Of course, I'm getting grief about when I'm inviting people over to 'sample' these creations, but that will have to wait since I'm just trying them looking for my favorites! One interesting one was the Margarita Chicken.... and yes I did add the Tequila! Now the recipe calls for grilling them and me... being me, I improvised. Just cooking them in a pan, once cooked I added some frozen mixed vegetables to complete the meal. In case you'd like to try this one... click here

Weekend Review

The weekend came and went way too fast... 3 years anticipation for the reunion and what seemed like only moments and it was over. We rented a camper for the drive 'up north', our home away from home, we picked it up Thursday evening..making sure to pack everything before leaving early Friday morning.
Our caravan of vehicles left by 7am for a very long drive... we were headed to the old hometown so close to the Canadian border that walking across a field would have had us leaving the country. We stopped for a lunch break and back into the rv having us reach our destination around 3pm. Relatives were already there... and the bus was loading for a 'tour' of old homes, history spots and learning about the past. After driving all that way, even though I would have loved to take the tour, riding for another hour really didn't seem all that appealing. Besides... lol, there will be a video from one relative or another available.
One reason for renting the rv, was to be able to get Gram and Gramps up there in a bit of comfort. Everyone was so excited to get a chance to visit with them... sister-in-laws and others were hugging them up as soon as we got them off the rv! Like us, they are realizing that Gram has aged quite a bit since the last reunion 3 years ago...and God willing, they both will be around for the next one in 2012.
Friday evening was mostly spent catching up some and getting settled in. We 'camped out' at the farm, while others headed into town and a motel for the night. We were warned though, that even though there were no roosters to wake us at dawn...there was Dennis. He has a habit of coming up to the yard and bleating his morning greetings quite early! My brother and his family had parked their camper a bit too close and had the morning surprise of Dennis sticking his head over the fence and giving them a very personal wake up.
Saturday was the big day of the reunion... lots of food, stories and visiting, along with the traditional 'Polish Horseshoe Tourney'. A bit different than normal horseshoes, washers are tossed into a 3 inch hole...scoring points if you made the washer into the hole, getting closer to the hole than your oppenents awards you a point as well. Definately a fun time for the day...
There was lots going on the whole weekend.... many people bring items for an auction, the funds going towards the next reunion and other family history expenses. There are always interesting things...homemade wines, Twins and Vikings items, quilts, and of course a few of those funny things that everyone just has to have... like the electronic fly swatters!
In the evening, the oldest of the family had the opportunity to tell a few stories from years past. More videos were taken... so that we will remember the stories and pass them along to future generations. Stories of growing up 'in the day', mooonshine tales, and how they met spouses and memories of past generations.
After the long day, most left for the hotels... being lucky enough to have 'camped out' at the farm, we enjoyed the fireworks from the comfort of the camper. It was quite a show.... of course, I thought of my camera just as the last of the lights faded from the sky! Oh well...
Sunday morning came way tooo fast... packing up and hitting the road for another long trip home. It seemed like everyone dozed off a bit except the driver. I think he probably slept pretty good last night. When we got home, after unloading the camper, we talked about another trip... in a few years renting a camper again and heading out, without such a rigid scedule... a bit more time to sit and enjoy...stop at a few more sites of interest, there are alot out there if you look just a little closer.

Is it Sunday already?

Well... I'm home, yipeee!!! The big family reunion was this weekend...packed up a camper and headed north, just not to Alaska but close the US/Canadian border. With about 200 relatives from 5 generations, the weekend was long enough and yet just a bit too short... the travel time was enjoyable but took up more of the time off than the reunion. Now its time for a shower and sleeping in my own bed, one more day off of work should help with uploading the pictures and catching up on little things...like laundry and sleep!
More to come later....

A busy summer... and learning alot!

This summer has been busy, in a sense. Mostly just normal stuff but as everyone knows, that can be busy enough sometimes..and of course throw in a few things that just happen to pop up.
There was the annual 4th of July get together and boat parade....
Next up is the big family reunion.... a three day event. I'm looking forward to it and yet looking forward to it being over.... just get back to the normal routine.
The learning comes with a few small computer problems I'm working through. The one thing I'm glad I did, was backing up all my files on cd. Some small bug or something or just the use of the computer and its aging, had me restore the thing back to its original 'new' format. That all done and over with, I had to restore all my pictures, files, etc.... uggh! Yet, through trial and error...I am learning, lol. With the restoring phase, I also updated to Explorer8.... still getting used to the whole thing. Now just to find a bit more time to learn some more!
Work of course is always interesting... some people get along, some just like making trouble. We are getting a new building(woohooo... it seems lately that we are all on top of each other...maybe the new building will ease some of the tensions!)... the building is a long time in the coming but hopefully by the middle of next month, we'll all be in our new 'home'. Like most of society, everyone is complaining about wages... who isn't right now? We've all lived with the excesses of the past, now its time to look at what it is that we need, not what we want.
I guess life is still interesting... it always will be, although I have my moments of wishing for dull and routine, lol.

A Summer Pest

This summer so far its been on the cooler side of things which isn't actually typical but it has some advantages... the wasps aren't out in full force just yet. Now this fun little buy and I have a long and interesting past. My first run in with his kind was years ago... I had put clothes out on the line to dry, one of those normal things to do. I had been called by a past employer to lend a hand at the retail shop I had worked at, so I grabbed the clothes off the line and got ready for work. Slipping on a pair of stockings, he got me!! Sure enough while the clothes were drying, he made his way into my sock and when I put my foot in...bang, he stung me! No big deal, right? Well... 8 hours on my feet at the cash register and doing other odds and ends, when I came home and pulled off my shoes and socks... my foot was swollen. A day or two of 'recovery' and things were back to normal.
Fast forward a few years, working outside...one of his kind got me again. This time on the ear... a long remembered wives tale had me mixing a bit of dirt with some water to make mud to place on the sting. Kind of funny now, but then..well, it worked well enough until I could do something about it. Pfftt... the next morning I work up with my ear about 3 times its normal size! I went to work, not realizing just how bad it was until I was sent home. I made a stop at the doctors and that lady doctor really sent me for a trip. By the time I got to see her, the swelling had moved half way down my throat. She imediately thought I was having a reaction... I was put on steroids and perscription strength Benadryl. Now me and the good Ben don't actually have a good working relationship... it puts me out, I'm pretty much useless. So I get a week off of work and the dual scripts have me awake long enough to take my next dose and I'm out again. For a few years after that I carried an epi-kit with me... Now what you are supposed to do with an epi-pen is give yourself a shot, should you ever have a reaction. Umm... I honestly never did see myself jabbing a needle in my leg should I get stung again. Its not that I'm afraid of needles or anything... I just couldn't see myself doing it. So for a few years, there was always a 'bee-sting' kit along with me. Of course everyone else was worried...what if? Pfftt... I can handle things, don't worry. It was later when I was seen by a doctor who raised bees as a hobby, who said, 'You're supposed to swell at the sting location'. Makes sense to me... if I were to swell up anywhere other than the sting spot, that would be the problem. He also told me, over the counter Benadryl would keep things in line until I could get to a doctor or call for help.
Of course another couple summers go by without any problems... then the dang insect got me again! This time right on the hand. Yep, swelling did occur! So much so that I thought my skin would burst and my flesh would start oozing out, lol. My right hand was again 3 times the size of my left. So its back to the Benadryl and sleeping all day. Now that was a fun weekend, NOT!
Who would have ever thought that a bug that size could cause sooo much trouble?
