29 de abril Springtime MemoriesWith spring finally showing herself and the warmer temps, it's gotten more than a few people starting to itch with the gardening fever. I'm doing a bit of dreaming myself... holding back from doing any purchasing just yet... but its kinda hard to window shop with ideas in the back of your mind. Little by little things will come together but in the meantime some memories from childhood come back and along with them more ideas of 'comfort' plants I'd like to incorporate.
Bleeding heart flowers will always make me think of my grandmother's house out on the farm... the delicate red hearts hanging from green foliage lined up against the house. Bright pink and white peonies lined the edge of the property at my grandparents cabin on the lake... and then there was the lilacs!
Both sets of grandparents had lilacs... the wonderful fragrence on a bright spring day filled the air. The purple and white flower clusters were always a treat...and as a kid, they made a 'surprise' bouquet to bring in after a day of playing outside. When my kids were little they would have 'rooms' amongst the lilac bushes.
When my sister and I were growning up, we made 'houses' out of the weeping willow trees. Willows seem to have a love/hate relationship nowadays amongst members of my family. Some finding them a messy pest of a tree, while others tend to have favorite memories of this graceful giant. My sister was talking the other day about planting a willow in her yard which brought back the stories. The branches hanging low enough for us to use them as 'doors' and 'walls' in our treehouse on the ground. We would have to part the leafy boughs to enter our abode. Once inside we would play house for hours.
Back then a little imagination and alot of free time made for some interesting memories! 23 de abril A Bit of This and ThatGoodness gracious.... best laid plans never seem to go as directed! Lol, I managed to develop a few of the photos from vacation with the intentions of putting together a scrapbook tonight. Well... instead I'm online chit~chatting through messages. Funny things happen from time to time in this crazy little world of mine... I mean, who'd a thunk I'd manage to meet one of my neighbors on a 'social networking' site, lol. So its the silly little back and forths of my comeback world. I guess the internet is somewhat of a backyard fence that neighbors lean against and visit with each other from time to time!
To answer the tournament question.... it was fun. I bowled 9 games... 3 each for team, doubles and singles. All in all it wasn't too bad but the tourney last a few months so there aren't really any results until you, if you're lucky, receive a check in the mail. This was my third time going to nationals.... I think I got $29 back one year. I managed to bowl my average or above 2 of the 3 sets, so I'm ok with it. I'm not exactly sure if I'm going to go next year..although El Paso does sound fun!
The temps here hit close to 80 today... beautiful sunny day. Now I'm hearing from the neighbor that he heard something said about snow on Sunday! Hmmm.... only in Minnesota would mother nature actually think that was supposed to be normal! lol
Below is a statue at the National Bowling Center in Reno
18 de abril Coffee and The NewsSo I'm enjoying my morning coffee and catching up on some news back home this morning. The one thing I've found intersting is the in-room coffee makers...maybe its just me not getting out in the right places enough but it caught me offguard to see the 'individual' cup coffee makes. I do love my morning coffee so its one of the first things I find in my room... Upon seeing the missing glass pot in the Reno hotel room, it threw me for a bit of a loop... I mean, heck...won't the styrofoam cup melt as it sits under the filter of the coffee maker? The tiny individual plastic containers hold your individual coffee packet, pour a cup's worth of water into the maker and push start....
Anyways...coffee talk done, time to get moving and wander the wharf...
First though...a link to the annual 'peeps' competition.... click here
And a picture from the bus.... sunset on the waters...ignore the waterspots from the bus window, lol.
16 de abril And the Vacation BeginsWouldn't ya know it.... I go someplace warm and its cold, warm at home from what I hear but a bit chilly here in Reno today. We flew into San Fransico where we will be staying over the weekend and took a bus here to Reno for the tournament... a nice little drive but seeing the slight snow flurries as we hit the summit of the mountains on the way through made me wonder just what I was doing south of home and seeing snow! I mean, heck... I've seen enough of that this year the way it was!
I'm looking forward to the bowling tonight and tomorrow but can't wait to get back to San Fransico and do a little exploring. Ok, so I'll do a little exploritory eating as well with the fresh seafoods and such on the bay. The only 'major' or planned expidition for the weekend is a ferry trip out to Alcatraz Island for the tour... 14 de abril Law of the Garbage TruckGoing through emails with my morning coffee.... my start of vacation! Thought I'd share since lately it seems I've got to remember this myself.
One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving
in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'
He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full
of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so... love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it! Have a blessed, garbage-free day! 08 de abril Spring has Sprung.... knock on woodI do believe spring may have officially sprung around here! I'm crossing my fingers and hoping I don't jinx it...I mean last year when I left for the National Bowling Tourney it snowed that morning!! I will be packing soon for my Reno trip...which I have mixed feelings on at the moment. It will be a fun time... with new things to do and see but I'll be missing out on a few family events that just happened to be scheduled at a bad time for me. A few folks think I should be upset but when you're trying to co-ordinate things with multile people you just gotta do what works. I'll be sitting on Fisherman's Wharf and wishing I was home for the evening... but pictures and moments made up later will do....
In the meantime... there's lots to do...sorta. I mean, when isn't there lots to do?
05 de abril A Week's Worth of FoodThere are somedays when work gets pretty interesting... the whole month last month took its toll on most of us. A couple of us were talking and made a plan for this coming week... we are celebrating so to speak, actually its more of a 'potluck' week. A bit of a play on words we are having a festive week...now we'll see who decides to co-operate.
Monday is going to be Mocha Monday... I found a quick easy recipe for an Almond Mocha Pie.
Tuesday is Taco Tuesday... we'll make a 'taco run' to the local fast food taco place.
Wednesday is going to be Wings Wednesday.... my contribution~ Honey Lime Wings ( I just might have to make an extra batch for me at home!!)
Thursday is still debatable, lol...my vote for thirsty Thursday was thought about but it just wouldn't be right..maybe AFTER work!
Friday is going to be Fried Friday.... hmmm, It just might be easier to buy something to warm up in the oven before heading to work for this one.
01 de abril Out like a lion? It's Minnesota.... the weather is always a topic of conversation. We are either rejoicing in the sunshine, snow or fall colors...or we are complaining about the heat, the snowfall or dry summers. March left us yesterday with a small lion, I think the lamb visited in mid month when we had temps in the 60's. The heavy wet snowfall didn't amount to much in my neighborhood but after the melt, snow, remelt, more snow pattern that has been in place all month...this snowfall is starting to wear on a person. Spring fever has been felt for the last few weeks and the itch to get out and grow something is in the high range. Seed catalogs have been out for awhile now and the stores are stocking their shelves with all the supplies and lawn decorations feeding most people's imaginations of warmer weather.
I keep looking at my yard... planning, wondering, imagining... just what kind of landscaping I"ll do this spring. My new patio was finished last summer... I did get a few plants in but there is more to do. More ideas, more changes.... but wait, there's snow on the patio furniture! Hmmmm, guess its still time to think about what is to come. |
