Tales of Wines

Last night I participated in a wine tasting at one of the churches in town. It was a fun night... I had won two tickets to the evenings events at a bingo party earlier this spring. Its one of those things, I don't think they are going to let me enter anymore raffles there, lol... I won the 'big' prize a year or two back, taking my kids to Vegas to celebrate their birthdays...and yes, I know, somewhat oximoronic that a church gives away a trip to sin-city but then again... it was a great time!

Back to the wine tasting... it was preceded by an hour long, one-man play on one of the miracles of our faith. It does give a person something to think about...especially when it comes to religion and wondering about the mysteries. For instance... gravity is a given, you can't see it but you can feel its effects if upon a mountain and you take that one wrong step..... Just because faith cannot be held, seen or tasted does it not exsist? It was too much to absorb last night after a long week's work and sleepless but busy last weekend. Of course at the beginning of the program everyone was advised to put cell phones and pagers on silent, which everyone did...but after the program while being instructed on the wine tasting, my sister's phone started vibrating! Lmao..omg, my sis, my daughter and I all started the giggles as the hummm of her phone did its intervals from somewhere within the depths of her purse! Checking my phone, a gf who was supposed to meet me there had left a text message of 'are you here?' Ironically enough she was just on the other side of the same row of seats as me. Now the explaination of the wine tasting was pretty funny... most people probably did know the details of what to do during a tasting but it was still spelled out..... the tiny plastic cups were for tasting, the larger ones were for spitting out the wine should you NOT want to drink it. Of course it was funnier last night as there was the 'demonstration' of size, swirling, spitting and such.

Once we had all met up for the tasting, the fun started... the silly little cups were emptied easily. A simple taste to see about the dryness or sweetness of the wines..and then the 'shot' effect of finishing the wines. Yeah, I know.... I'm not THAT 'cultured' to sip a few wines, we all had had a long week, cabin fever being what it is in the midwest...we enjoyed ourselves. As we mingled amongst the folks, sipping wines and viewing 'silent auction' items of the fundraiser night, we nibbled the cheeses and fresh grapes and laughed about silly little things. A few times people would wander the crowd, passing out the little cups of samples... silly us, one guy had been down to his last little cup but instead of having him go get more, we just 'shared' the last cup...refilling it for each of us. Lol, did I say we like to enjoy ourselves and the silly little things are sometimes the funnest of times. Now a couple of the girls had found their 'favorite' of the samplings, returning a few times to enjoy more... the 'presenter' had finished the open bottles and called for help in 'decorking' a fresh one. My daughter stepped right up to corkscrew and helped out... one of my gfs then asked if we could just have a spitting cup of wine, lol...the larger one, so as not to have to return for each ounce as we had found a table to sit and visit at. We had 'graduated' to the larger glasses!! As the evening started coming to a close, a few bottles of wine were still left and we asked about making a donation and being able to bring a few home with us...  This morning I wonder if anyone else had that idea, my bottle is in the fridge...

I will have to make a stop sometime this week, to pick up my 'other' bottles of wine.... my winning 'auction' items. I think I might be stocked up for a time!

What does one do during a bad economy?

Well, as usual everyone is analysising the economy nowadays. The other morning (or evening for that matter) a little factual tidbit blurb caught my attention. The online/ homedelivered dvd movies have become popular...along with this 'nesting' (us folks staying home and entertaining ourselves to save some money) it seems that cond*m sales are also edging their way up. Ok, so that last tidbit isn't what I was starting off to blog about but did find it interesting, lol.

Anyways, interesting tidbits aside... if I happen to be in the mood to catch any certain tv programs (not movies because unless they really catch my interest and draw me in, I can only do the hour attention span). I've found I am enjoying a few of the shows on FOX...
House and 24 keep me enteretained on the occational Monday night. The new show on Wednesdays, 'Lie to Me' is really drawing me in... the only downfall, I'm usually not home on Wednesdays so later in the week, its time to catch up via online tv watching. (Tvguide.com)

Lie to Me is drawing me in with its watching of people.... as the commercial about the show said, "Everyone lies, the intereting part is why they lie". Its about watching people's faces and how a micro second response shows a person's true emotion. Here's a clip about the micro facial gestures... click here.

Sunday Afternoon

We've had some beautiful weather lately, knock on wood.... I think spring is trying extremely hard to find a crack in winter's armor to make its way back to my neck of the woods. With the warmer weather everyone is getting cabin fever...the need to escape the trapping of being inside without the factor of cold weather. Hardy midwesterners usually do find ways to enjoy life even with the lower temps, I mean look at the outdoor pond hockey games, skiing and other such activities.
This past weekend, one of my friends and I took off after work Friday for one of the local casinos for the night, then wandered over to the hot air balloon event in a neighboring town. The casino night was fun... my first $20 hit a few times and soon I was up to $100. My girlfriend had been having a rough month, her grandmother passed away a couple weeks back and now her uncle was in the hospital as well.... I offered to a nice steak dinner at the casino's steak house. We enjoyed some wonderful food.... the breads brought out were wonderful. We had the Parmesan Onion Ring appetizer with a spicy ranch dip, fresh salads...and then the steaks!! I had ordered the steak and shrimp dinner...omg, there was soooooo much food and so delicious!! A huge baked potato and grilled asparagus finished out my dinner. Now you think that all that food would be enough, right? lol...oh what the heck, dessert!!!! I ordered a sugar-free carrot cake that when it came was HUGE.  We took half the meal back to the room, lol.
Back in the hotel room, we watched Howie Mandel's new game show.... hmmm, some people will do anything, lol. A quick nap and then it was off to the pool for a bit... the little kidlets had their time, 10 pm was adult time. While we had wanted to relax in the hot tub, it was full of other adults with the same idea... so we did take advantage of an empty swimming pool.
The next morning we did a little shopping before heading out to the hot air balloon event. Now the lift off of the balloons was at 7:30am... lol, I'm not up that early on a day off of work, so we would settle for some of the other events of the day. One of which was a smooshboard race... uh huh, we invent things to try, lol. Four people on large ski-type footwear have to work together to make it around the course. It does take teamwork and communication to do this without falling over!! Now the outfits in the picture need a little explaination... it was the 20th anniversary of the weekend's events, so some of the contestants wore 20's style clothing... check out the pics!

The Spring Tease

It took all month but we got our spring tease yesterday... while it really was a beautiful day, it might make the next snowfall a bit harder to take. We almost didn't get our January thaw this year, waiting for the last day of the month but it was worth it.... 46 degrees! After a bit of morning errands I even managed to get out and scrap some of the lingering snow off the driveway. After a snowy December, the little dustings that occured during January left me thinking... I can just leave it, it'll melt. Little to my hopes, it waited all month to melt.

I'm hoping that the tease lasts just a bit longer.... although the thaw does bring on the muddy mess of spring. From one wet season to the next... all the price we pay for the anticipation of the lazy days of summer.
