30 de dezembro Back in the SaddleAfter having a week off last week, it was back to work yesterday...and what a day it was! I had the flu last week, just in time for Christmas but after seeing the doctor last Monday, I needed the extra rest. So after a week of sleeping until at least 8, yeah I know... oh glorious sleep...I was up and moving at 5:30 once again. Of course getting grief at work is a given... so by 10ish I was ready for a nap, lol but I wasn't getting much sympathy.
It ended up being a long day... the side roads had become more or less skating rinks due to the thaw and refreeze from the weekend's warming weather... and going more than 10 mph gave your backend a bit of a mind of its own! Now this morning...we've got snow!!! Good thing its a short week again with the holiday on Thursday...
I do need to get back to my blogging but at the moment, its just been a busy, crazy world....
21 de dezembro Seeing the end of the tunnel....December is always such a busy month for me. I used to work retail and preparing for the Christmas holiday started right after Thanksgiving. I also did alot of volunteer work with the kids and helping them realize the importance of giving a little to others made December one where the sharing was once again another added time consumption. Now I work for the Post Office and I'm at another type of job which makes December quite busy. This year I threw in a good cold that's hanging on, just for fun. I've been exhausted!! Weekends, which should be meant for visiting and getting out and about have been more about catching up on some much needed sleep, but the light at the end of the tunnel is starting to glow just a bit!!!
A couple more workdays and things won't be as demanding... ok, that and I've started my megadoses of vitamin C.
A friend of mine blogged a few questions for the holiday... now I'm kind of interested in some of your answers as well. So here goes...
1. If there were no obstacles to overcome (time, money, distance, whatever) what would your ideal Christmas Day be? 2. What are your big plans for Christmas this year? 3. What is one of your favorite childhood Christmas memories? 4. Would you rather greet someone with Bah Humbug, or Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays and why? 5. What is your favorite thing about the holidays?
and here are my answers to her blog questions....
1. If there were no obstacles to overcome (time, money, distance, whatever) what would your ideal Christmas Day be?
This one is easy!!! Every Christmas is an ideal one..they all have their own special memories... I'm lucky enough to have family close by... there is no set time or special expectations... there is already too much pressure on the holidays to be 'perfect' why should we add one more? 2. What are your big plans for Christmas this year? I will work Christmas eve day... always have for the most part, I've worked retail (Christmas eve was a blast..but exhausting day) and now for the USPS... I'll go to my folks place, where through-out the evening family will come and go. Christmas day I'll go over to my daughter's place for my grandson's first Christmas!! 3. What is one of your favorite childhood Christmas memories? Being at my aunt's house and thinking we saw Rudolph on top of the barn, lol Going to my Grandmother's and smelling all the wonderful aromas of the traditional Christmas foods .... and the always dependable, firecall...my dad was on the department and it never failed back then that a fire or other emergency would be called in making us wait for dad's return. 4. Would you rather greet someone with Bah Humbug, or Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays and why? Lol... at work, its bah humbug!! I love Christmas but working for the postal service, December gets to be a very long, tiring month. The last week before Christmas though, I do get a bit holidayish and the Merry Christmas begins... lol, the end of crunch time is then in sight!! 5. What is your favorite thing about the holidays? As I've grown older and..maybe wiser, its not about the material things... its the people. The family members, the friendships... the smiles. I hope everyone has a festive Christmas... 13 de dezembro The good old days of snowball fightsLast weekend we finally got some snow, there's more predicted for Sunday... but as some folks have been saying we just don't get snow like we did 'back in the day'. I'm not sure if that's really true or if, as kids, we just remember having more fun in the snow.
Growing up, we were always outside finding adventures. I remember days of climbing snowhills and sledding, all bundled up in snowsuits, scarfs, boots and mittens. Days of making snow forts and having snowball fights.... laying in the snow, making snow angels and tasting snowflakes just as long as they weren't yellow!
Somewhere there's a picture of my sister, brother and I ontop of a snowhill that was as high as the roofline of our house. Then as we got older there are the pictures of us snowmobiling.... We had to take the required class to obtain our license, putting in class hours and then doing the 'driving test' before passing and getting the proper permission to hit the trails. Oh for the carefree days.... I really should think about getting a 'sled' now and getting out on the trails once again. There is just some special magic about being out and about challenging the elements during the winter.
But I once again have been sidetracked from my original post,lol.... the snowball fight! I remember a warmer early spring Saturday that turned into a fun winter adventure. One of my high school girlfriends and I had decided to talk a walk downtown to the 'five and dime store', not looking for anything but more just a waste of a Saturday afternoon's boredom. As we walked along the sidewalk, a snowball hit close by... turning to find out where it came from, we saw the boys, a crush of mine and his friend. The challenge was on!!! Of course, we had to throw a snowball back at them...and dodge a few more. Up and down the streets of town it continued. When we reached the corner 'dimestore' we thought we were safe... but the little game continued. Up and down the aisles, we hid and spied upon our rivals hoping to sneak out of the store and get a head start on our way home, a safer throwing distance away from their arms. We splashed our way through spring puddles and dodged more snowballs as we made our way towards home... stopping once inside the local laundry mat, which wasn't a bright idea, lol. We needed to use the restroom, catch our breathe but the laundry mat only has one useable entrance/exit! We were stuck for the time being...the boys watching and waiting outside. We finally did make it back to my house...the boys following, climbing over the backyard fence to throw a few more snowballs, then it was time to sit and warm up with hot cocoa.
As the weatherman now reminds me of the approaching winter storm for this weekend, I will sit back and enjoy the snowfall with fun memories... and who knows, maybe its time to make a few more new ones.
08 de dezembro Oh for the Love of CoffeeI've never really thought about how much I depend on my morning coffee...until this morning!! Yesterday my coffee maker decided to quit working, right in the middle of lunch with family over to visit. I had made coffee in the morning, started a pot for the afternoon... it perked and made noises but when it came down to pouring a cup? Nada.... oh boy, so this morning it was time to check the cupboards for the old 'standby'... guess I know what to put on my wish list for this Christmas, lol. 03 de dezembro StarsAn Eskimo legend....
Perhaps they are not stars,
but rather openings in Heaven
where the Love of our lost ones
pours through and shines down
upon us to let us know
they are happy.
One of my favorite lines from the 'Men in Black' movie is in the opening moments when the older guy talks about the stars.... I've always found comfort in the stars. There were many a summer night when my kids and I would lay on the ground watching the skies, finding constellations and satelites. Upon the rare metorite shower, I'd grab a cup of coffee and a blanket and head out in the fresh 3am country air. Oh my....Dang.... a new look? This may take some time to investigate...and more coffee!!! 02 de dezembro flashing lights to wake up toThe weather man was predicting a couple inches of snow possible last night when I went to bed..... this morning after I hit the snooze button a couple times, the flashing lights of a city vehicle were making their way into my bedroom. Dang, gotta check to see if I need to blow the driveway.... imagine my surprise when it was the street sweeper!!! Who'da thunk? Sweeping the street on December 2nd instead of the snow plow!!! I'm loving it, lol.... but as it always goes...the snow will appear and I will get my turn of waking the neighbors at 5am as I clear my driveway so I can get to work. |
